Charlie's Country

A really rough mirror held up to the Aborigines in the contemporary Australian society. The movie asked an array of questions and it didn’t answer any of them, but it shows the reality which no Australian can even as much as admit to themselves. I must say that after I watched the movie, I googled around and tried to find out whether it’s really as bad in Australia as this movie presents it. And maybe it’s actually even worse. However, to us – unbiased individuals – it’s completely clear, but go ahead explain that to an Australian who lives there today. There’s really nothing left to do than hope that the Australian government finds a way to the Aborigines and tries to rescue them from the situation they live in. It’s hard to find any other words to describe this movie… (15/06/2015)

I took to the quirky Charlie right from the start. At first because he had a divine sense of humor, but over time, I realized that it wasn't that funny after all; he was just trying to humanize a rather terrible life imposed on the Aborigines by the dominance of white settlers. I wish Charlie's sad story would spur to action those Australians who could move the fate of the Aborigines in a direction in which they could once again become rightful inhabitants of their country. However, it is clear to me that this is a wish from the realm of dreams. I feel all the more moved when I reflect more thoroughly on the film I have just watched. (26/06/2020)
