The film was inspired by Victor Hugo's collection of poems by L'Année terrible, specifically a story about the innocent victims of revolution. The epilogue to this horrible story of the execution of a loyal young man was nevertheless added by the director. Another unique feature is the evocation of the Parisian uprising of 1871.
This is probably the last film that Alice Guy made for Gaumont. It is a rare film that evokes the Paris Commune with a certain dose of sympathy. (Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival)
