Mats is a young, rather naive farmer from the province of Dalarna. He is in love with Marit, a girl who is pure in heart. But their idyll is soon threatened. Marit's purity and happiness arouse the jealousy of her neighbours, and rumours are spread that she is a witch. She dies just before she is to be burned at the stake, and Mats, outraged, sets off on the road to heaven to demand justice on her behalf. It is a long journey, and many things happen to Mats. But, ultimately, he fails. He becomes an evil-doer because God has allowed an innocent girl to be sacrificed. Mats dies a rich, lonely man who has lost his soul. (texte officiel du distributeur)
