During his wandering Jean Morell finds shelter from the storm in castle which seems to be abandoned. The doors are open, but the fireplace is on and the table is set. When he is sitting down he notices that there is a killed man on the floor. He wants to run away but the doors have been closed already. He is just picking up the murder weapon a bloody knife when policemen rush into the room and arrest him. He is convicted of the murder of the count d'Orville. The real killer was the cousin of the count who was helped by Pierre the count's valet. The valet who robbed the count's treasures and run away with them is also was arrested and imprisoned in the next cell to Jean. They try to get away from the prison together, but the valet is shot. Jean is able to escape, he can get the treasures robbed by Pierre and goes back to the castle because he wants to get his revenge on the real killer. He pretends to be the legal heir and moves in the castle. One night the count's cousin entered the same room in which the murder happened. He shoots Jean the only man who knows his crime. Jean is wounded but he recovers thanks his steward's daughter who nursed him. Jean finds the count's testament. The count disinherited his cousin because of his light-minded life. He wanted that his cousin's disappeared son would be his legal heir. After Jean's recovery they organise a garden party in his honour. After the party Jean goes to his room. The count's cousin rushes in and tries to kill him. They are grappling with each other when the count's cousin notices an amulet, a scorpio on the neck of Jean. He realises that Jean is his son. When he knows that he landed his own son to prison, then he wanted to kill him, he is running away from the castle. There is a storm outside, and Jean's father is killed by a bolt of light.
