Madách Imre meets Fráter Erzsike, a coquette, at a ball in 1845. His mother is opposed to the marriage and decides to take her son back to Stregova, the family estate. However, when she sees that the condition of her son, a weak and frail man, deteriorates as a result of his lovesickness, she agrees to his marrying the girl, whom she does not like at all. The revolution breaks out, Madách is down with an illness. After the revolution is put down, he is, however, imprisoned for having hidden Rákóczi János on his estate. Madách's wife, now a lonely broken woman, finds comfort in Hanzély Ferenc, which her mother-in-law also learns. Madách returns home. He is working on The Tragedy of Man, later to become his most famous tragedy. Soon enough, he will see his wife's coquetry for himself, and decides to get a divorce. He is, however, unable to forget her. His Tragedy is a big success, but Madách cannot be happy as he misses Erzsi, who is absent from those celebrating the now famous author.
