An American singer visiting Stockholm is approached by Vietnam draft dodgers in a uniquely interesting and rarely screened film about love and race relations, scripted by Maya Angelou. Novelist and civil rights activist Maya Angelou just wrote a single screenplay, and that was for Stig Björkman. Angelou had just found literary and political stardom through I know why the caged bird sings when she came up with the story of a black pop star visiting Sweden with an entourage that includes an intense manager and a Black Panther activist. Stig Björkman’s direction is characterised by human intimacy, political passion and a certain amount of Stockholm romanticism. Through its unusual themes and challenging story (the ending can provide fodder for endless discussions), Georgia, Georgia is a film that raises question relevant even in our times.
