Maj-Brit and Christina are best friends despite their very different backgrounds: Maj-Brit's parents are unemployed and struggle to make ends meet. Although a home with tight financial restraints, there is no shortage of affection and the family is united around the father's passion for carrier pigeon racing. In contrast, Christina's parents are busy with demanding careers and hectic social calendars. They try to make up for the lack of quality time by providing material goodies in abundance. All the same, Christina's elder brother, against the wishes of his parents, spends much of his time at the local amateur boxing club, whilst Christina seeks the company of Maj-Brit's family rather than her own.

The two young girls' friendship is severely tested when Maj-Brit's pet baby pigeons appear on the menu of one of Christina's mother's fancy dinner parties. However, the girls soon bury the hatchet and reunite in an effort to train Victoria, a pigeon with a broken wing given to Maj-Brit as consolation for the hapless dinner pigeons.

Then more serious problems arise for Maj-Brit. One night when she is left in sole charge of her father's prize winning pigeons, she forgets to close the door to the pigeon shed and all the pigeons are slain by the fox. Only Victoria, nursed in Maj-Brit's room, has escaped the massacre. Now the brave Victoria must save the family honour and Maj-brit's anguished conscience by winning the forthcoming Big Race. But even if the girls can nurse her back to health in time, will she be able to fly the distance? Maj-Brit and Christina make good use of all available means to ensure that their plan is successful. They even rope in Christina's father who very much despite himself is gripped by this distinctly non-elitist sport. In their effort to win the day, the girls unwittingly help solve the problems in Christina's family and prove that you can overcome most obstacles with help from friends and a positive go-for-it attitude.
