In an indistinct age and in a country hit by war, two caped and hooded riders arrive in a deserted-looking village. Waiting in a fortress-like house, a schoolmaster heats the fireplace, lays the table, and welcomes them. His wife left him long ago, running away with an officer they had quartered. One of the newcomers is a beautiful young woman, the other one is a young captain. It is recalled that the woman's aged father, a colonel, was killed by forest thugs after the lost battle, and the young officer and the woman flew together. Here their love finds fulfilment. Along with the remaining residents they join to bury the notary and to burn candles for the dead. The couple set out to leave. The schoolmaster follows them – there being nothing left to keep him here. (Új Budapest Filmstúdió)
