The first segment of the film revisits six stories from Cesare Pavese's Dialogues with Leucò (1947). The second segment is comprised of extracts of another book by Pavese, The Moon and the Bonfires (1950). After World War II, an emigrant comes back to his village in the Langhe to find out that everyone he knew has died, and that the war has deeply changed relationships between people.
