A serviceable, if stilted, biopic about the eponymous hero in boxing and racial equality, who became heavyweight champ in the '30s despite overwhelming prejudice and Max Schmelling. I'm used to Louis' story in terms of those Max Schmeling fights, whereas this is his standalone movie. Much of the film works almost in a documentary style, and watching the development is very interesting. The biography would look very different today. Those major boxing stories in the pre-war world are still attractive. Max, by the way, is played by William Thourlby.
