The Black Dream tells the melodrama of a beauty queen played by Asta Nielsen before she became Die Asta. Her lover is the attractive Valdemar Psilander. Their first cinematic encounter enchanted film audiences so much that they were almost immediately eager to see the sequel, i.e., The Ballet Dancer. It’s not surprising, as the plot has a lot going for it with several exotic elements, including multiple angles and a circus backstage. It takes place in well-chosen environments, in several salons and, for example, in an artist's studio. I had no doubts about Asta as an actress because she is spectacular as a tragedian. Valdemar Psilander was a bit overshadowed by her, but he still managed the strong congruence perfectly. I also have no problem with the narration being in large chunks, especially when secession is still in full swing. ()
