Marshal, Jered Maddox arrive à Sabbath avec un objectif bien précis : arrêter les sept cow-boys qui ont accidentellement tué un vieux fermier à l’issue d’une beuverie. S’il demande de l’aide au shérif local, Cotton Ryan, il n’obtient qu’un aveu d’impuissance, ce dernier s’étant depuis longtemps soumis à l’autorité de Bronson, le puissant propriétaire terrien contre lequel il aurait dû se dresser. Après avoir tué deux hommes et capturé un troisième, Maddox semble prêt à renoncer à sa mission, sachant qu’elle n’aboutira qu’à un bain de sang. The rumours that this is very much Last Train from Gun Hill in a much dirtier, grittier and grey rendition don't lie. There are no good or bad characters, there’s perhaps only one who slides into that because of his hot-headedness. Otherwise, it honestly sticks sympathetically to the last moments in the grey area of "where justice begins/ends and where/when excessive to fanatically blind adherence to the letter tips over into creating bad blood with repercussions far beyond the original act". It is the spiral of actions and consequences that draws in more and more characters who had nothing to do with the original unrest. And it's all delivered through well-written dialogue rather than gunfights. There are gunfights, but when they happen, they stay within the boundaries of believable duels that neither side really wants to get into. But it's still primarily a western, where a bullet often whistles, not a psychological study, but still a bloody good western.
