Ylva's yearning to create movies began at a film festival in London where she saw "I've Heard the Mermaids Singing". She went home and enrolled at Stockholm's Film School and later the director's programme at the Drama Institute. Previously, she'd been most interested in playing in a band and was part of the first wave of punk as it raged through Stockholm. Ylva's interest in music has seen her direct music videos for the Hellacopters and others. She has also directed and edited documentaries and short films. Ylva loves musicals and thinks Swedish movies have too little music. "Kidz in da Hood" is her first feature-length movie and it's always been a given that there would be plenty of music and singing in the film.
