Joost Rekveld

Biographie

Joost REKVELD (1970, Netherlands) has been making abstract films and light installations since 1991. His animations are inspired by cybernetics, artificial life and robotic architecture. His film #11, Marey <-> Moiré (1999) was the first Dutch film to be shown at the Sundance Film Festival. His short film #43 (2013) was part of Vertical Cinema, a compilation programme consisting of 10 experimental films on 35mm film, made for projection on a monumental vertical screen and presented at IFFR 2013. From 2008 until 2014, he led the ArtScience Interfaculty at the Royal Conservatoire and the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. He has also published numerous essays and curated exhibitions, as well as several film programmes about the history of abstract animation and light art. Rekveld is currently a board member for Sonic Acts in Amsterdam and for the Centre for Visual Music in Los Angeles. In 2017, IFFR dedicates a retrospective to the work of Joost Rekveld, consisting of his short films, including the world premiere of his new film #67 and his new installation #61.
