Biographie

Denis Villeneuve first garnered international attention with his medium-length documentary REW-FFWD (1994) about life in the ghetto of Kingston, Jamaica. In 1998 he shot his first feature August 32nd on Earth, which premiered at Cannes and was subsequently screened at 35 other festivals around the globe.

This was followed by the equally successful outings Maelström (2000), Next Floor (2008, short), Polytechnique (2009) and Incendies (2010), all of which were shown at Karlovy Vary in 2011 when the festival overviewed his work.

Villeneuve's subsequent films have been shot in the USA. Prisoners (2013), Enemy (2013) and Sicario (2015) contain elements typical of movie thrillers, as did the science fiction film Arrival (2016), but his movies blend the original flair of a true auteur with genre conventions.
