Biographie
Né à Accra (Ghana) en 1957, John Akomfrah grandit à Londres puis fait des études de sociologie à la Portsmouth Polytechnic, où il obtient son diplôme en 1982. Il est l’un des fondateurs de l’atelier audiovisuel Black Audio Film Collective à Londres, une structure qui s’intéresse à l’identité culturelle des noirs britanniques. Son premier film, Handsworth Songs (1986), lui vaut un John Grierson Award. Il signe ensuite Testament (1988), Who Needs a Heart?(1991), Seven Songs for Malcolm X (1993) et Speak Like a Child (1998).
