He was born in 1929 in Vienna and passed in 1998 in Vienna as well. As a child, he lived in immigration in the Netherlands. In the fifties, he worked as a bank clerk, and at the same time also started to cooperate with artistic groups Strohkoffer and Art-Club. In 1952, he began experimenting with 8mm film. In the second half of the fifties, he started developing his own specific technique of editing 16mm film and began to mark his films with serial numbers and the years they were made in. Together with Peter Kubelka, he is considered one of the pioneers of structural film. In the sixties, Kren joined the Viennese actionists and his projects have been bordering on the illegal. In the seventies and eighties, Kren lived in Germany and the United States of America. By then, he had already had a number of exhibitions and film shows and his movies had become part of important collections of modern art. Kren returned to Austria in 1989. He was a member of several artistic groups.
